The Wheelers are delighted to announce a new venture taking place on Sunday 9th December and that is the “All-Together” cycle. All the different sections of the Wheelers – leisure, club racing, open racing and mountain biking will unite for a cycle (with a coffee break en-route) to help introduce new members to the club. So anyone thinking of joining or anyone apprehensive of riding with a group – this is your chance to come along and see what we are all about. It does not matter how good or bad you are – no one will be left behind! So come along and chat to the lads and lassies and enjoy their love of the sport. The meeting place is Moynan’s bike shop and the time will be 9.30am. Helmets are a must!
And as a special offer to celebrate our 25th anniversary, just for the 2013 season we are offering free club membership to new members which does not include Cycling Ireland licence fees, which are obligatory. The contact for membership details is email@example.com.
Also all club members are entitled to 10% discount at Moynan’s bike shop.
The club’s AGM was held on Monday 12th November in The Dapp Inn and a larger number than usual came along for it. There were some lively discussions and some great ideas put forward for the 2013 season and a new committee was elected to deal with the fast-approaching season. The only person missing from the photograph (taken by Selina Hynes) is Kevin Byrne, who this year is acting as Honorary Treasurer. John O’Carroll took a break from “active service” this year and we thank him most sincerely for his hard work over the years, always done with a smile, good humour and a lot of wisdom!
Early on Sunday morning when we headed for Moynan’s shop for the pre-race meeting, the weather was so bad we didn’t really expect to find anyone but amazingly there was enough brave and hardy souls to run a race. By the time the race started, the rain had actually stopped but it was still windy. The route was from Castlelough car park to Portroe School – a distance of just 2.2 miles but tough! Tommy Hanrahan continued his run of great racing and took not only the fastest time but the Championship too while Pat Bergin took second in both categories, unable to overtake his colleague! In the race, Peter Moynan rode a great time to claim third place while Liam Callaghan had taken third in the flat race. In spite of the poor weather, five riders improved their times from last year – Pat, Liam and Duncan while Aidan and Tommy improved by a minute plus. Well done to all who turned out and rode so well!
That was the last race of the season and the club’s end of season get together wil be on Friday 19th October in Una Powell’s, Summerhill.
Weatherwise, it was fingers crossed this morning but fortunately the rain stayed away and although it was breezy, conditions weren’t bad. Again, being near the end of the season, the sign-on wasn’t huge but it was a great race and some brilliant times were registered. The route was from Birdhill to the first Nenagh roundabout and return – a distance of 18.5 miles. In flat time, Tommy Hanrahan took his third win in a row with 44.03 while John Foote powered in at 45.36 and Pat Bergin was third with 46.26. When time adjustments were made Aidan Killeen, riding well within his time bonus took third place while Tommy Hanrahan claimed second and the 2012 Club Time Trial Champion is John Foote.
The Flying Mile was held on Thursday evening (6th Sept) on a measured mile in the N52 bypass in glorious sunshine! And we added a 5th man to the total who have achieved under 2 mins and that was the very-in-form Tommy Hanrahan. He clocked in at 1.59 and very well done to him. He won the 3rd group while Brian O’Neill took group two and Aidan Killeen outpaced Duncan Hodgins for group 1. A good evenings sprinting and well done to all who took part.
